In this issue of our newsletter: The Professional Artist

"Another thing that separates a member of the audience from a professional is that the professional only thinks in terms of getting out an actual product. It never enters his head that he's just there for the ride or that being an 'expert' is enough. A member of the audience has no faintest concept or idea of getting out a product.

"A professional knows the rules of the game as a matter of course so that he can achieve, in the upper strata above that, a high quality of art."

- L. Ron Hubbard

Message from the Director

As artists we all know there is a tremendous amount of creativity that goes into our craft to make our art become a reality. Then there is the challenge of getting others to view, hear or experience our art form. It is common knowledge that with every profession, there is an exact skill set that must be learned and practiced. A vital aspect to this skill set, that is often overlooked, is having the tools to successfully run our art career as a business, thereby creating adequate compensation and the wherewithal to make a living from our labors. This is where L. Ron Hubbard’s management technology comes into play and it is what EMA Artists USA promotes and teaches. If you are not already a member, I urge you to find out more and perhaps become one.

– Leisa Collins

Featured Artist of the Month: ILIA aka Leigh-Ann Edrich

A multi-talented artist who creates in every part of her life, Ilia was inspired by the creativity of her mother and grandfather, and learned at a mere three years of age that "life is a canvas upon which we create." Known for her ability to communicate exactly what the viewer wants in her commissioned pieces, she sold her first work in 1987, titled Cosi Fan Tuti. She creates art in order to inspire others, and she has taken her vision from the canvas to the streets, pioneering a series of events called Art in the Park, which are focused on neighborhood participation and togetherness.

Please tell us a little bit about your art business.

I specialize in art that takes people to places they haven't been before.

I create fantasy forms and shapes then fuse them together into digital art using colors that simulate nature and space.

In general, how has the use of Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology impacted your business?

Before I joined EMA Artists USA, I only had parts of Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology in. I struggled along, doing other jobs, not being a full-time artist.

Since joining EMA Artists USA, I've been with a group that works as a team to push each other forward on a weekly basis. Using Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology my art business has gone from a struggling artist with a fairly good following to Internationally known, published and exhibited artist in a year.

What piece of Mr. Hubbard's administrative wisdom have you found particularly helpful in making your business successful?

I lined up my Administrative Scale with my yearly Strategic Plan. It worked like pure magic.

I also used Mr. Hubbard's ethics technology in order to find ethical art businesses to work with. I found companies who allow that the artist keeps his rights, get paid directly, knows the contact information of the buyer and can add it to his mailing list. Additionally, I wanted companies that would help me to promote internationally, as an added benefit.

As a successful art business owner, is there one really valuable tip that you would like our readers to take away with them?

Keep a record of your actions: what worked and what didn't. Be sure to align that information with your weekly and daily activities.
